Vancouver is where the Pacific meets the mountains, a glass-towered city ringed by ocean, rainforest and ski slopes. The 400-hectare Stanley Park frames the downtown peninsula with its seawall, totem poles and the Vancouver Aquarium, all easily explored on foot or by bike. Just across the harbour, the North Shore mountains rise sharply within view of the city centre.
Two of the region's signature experiences sit minutes apart on the North Shore. The Capilano Suspension Bridge sways 70 metres above a temperate rainforest canyon and connects to treetop walkways, while a short hop away the Grouse Mountain Skyride gondola climbs to alpine viewpoints, wildlife refuge and, in winter, ski runs overlooking the city lights.
Down at sea level, Granville Island's public market, the historic streets of Gastown with its steam clock, and seasonal whale-watching trips into the Salish Sea round out a city that pairs urban polish with the outdoors at every turn.
Visit Capilano early or late to beat tour-bus crowds; your ticket includes the Cliffwalk and Treetops Adventure.
Take the free shuttle to Capilano from downtown in summer rather than driving, as parking is limited.
Pack layers for Grouse Mountain; the summit is noticeably cooler than the city, even in summer.
Whale-watching is best from May to October, when orca and humpback sightings peak in the Salish Sea.
Yes. Both are on the North Shore and lie about 15 minutes apart by car or shuttle, so many visitors pair them in a single day. Allow two to three hours for Capilano's bridge, Cliffwalk and Treetops, then head up the Grouse Mountain Skyride for the afternoon.
The park itself is free to enter and explore on foot or bike along the seawall. Paid attractions inside include the Vancouver Aquarium and the seasonal miniature train. Bike rentals are available near the Georgia Street entrance if you want to ride the full 9-kilometre loop.
The main season runs from April or May through October, when resident and transient orcas, humpbacks and other marine life are most active in the Salish Sea. Tours depart from downtown and Steveston; bring a warm windproof layer, as it is cool on the water even on sunny days.
